COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BLADE, RAZOR
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description, for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This commercial item description covers two types of razor blades for use in removing hair from human skin.
Type I- Single edge, carbon steel
Type II- Double edge, stainless steel
2. Salient Characteristics:
2.1 Type I blades shall be single edge carbon steel with a carbon content of not less than 0.90 percent and no more than 1.05 percent.
2.2 Type II blades shall be double edge stainless steel and meet the composition requirements in Table I.

2.3 Hardness. The hardness of Type I and Type II blades, tested at the edge of the blade adjacent to the beveled cutting edge, shall not be less than 85 nor more than 93 on the Rockwell N superficial scale.
2.4 The included angle of each cutting edge shall not be less than 17 degrees nor more than 27.5 degrees. The Cutting edge of Type I and both cutting edges of Type II blades shall be ground, honed, and polished to razor sharpness and shall be free from cracks, bent, edges, jagged ends, honed edge gouge out, or one side not honed. Blades shall average not more than three each 0.0004 inch (1/100 mm) long nicks per edge (when viewed at 100 power magnification) and shall not be closer than 1/4 inch, (6.4 mm) apart. For the purpose of this description, a nick is defined as a chipped out, broken out, indented, bent out, semi-circular projection, or any similar gap, indentation, or projection having a dimension greater than 0.0004 inch (1/100 mm). Nicks 0.0004 inch (1/100) or smaller, or any nick appearing in the chamfered or curved portion at the ends of the cutting edge shall not be counted. Type I blades shall be a minimum of 0.008 inch thick. Type II blades shall be a minimum of 0.004 inch thick.
