Design and Construction
Handle. The handle shall be serrated or grooved to provide suitable gripping surface and reduce slippage. The handle diameter (when round) shall be 6 mm. (0.24 inch) minimum. Handle width, across flats, (when rectangular) at the smallest cross-section, shall be 6 mm. (0.24 inch) minimum.
Razor Head. The razor head shall be designed to position the blade(s) at an angle that provides a close, nick free shave with minimal pressure, in accordance with industry standards for disposable safety razor manufacture. There shall be no movement of the blade(s) in the razor head. The razor head length shall be a minimum of 38 mm. (1.5 inches). For fixed head razors (Class 1), the razor head shall be attached to the handle by any means that prevents movement of the head or removal of the head without destruction of the attaching mechanism. For pivoting head razors (Class 2), the razor head shall be attached to the handle to facilitate a pivot angle of from 25 to 42 degrees in a direction perpendicular of the cutting edge of the blade(s). The long axis of the razor head must remain rigid and perpendicular to the handle.
Finish of the blade. The cutting edge of the blade shall be bilaterally ground and honed to razor sharpness. The final honed bevels shall be flat, smooth, and continuous throughout the entire length of the blade. Except for the extreme 1.6 mm (0.063 in) at either end, the cutting edge shall be free from micro-cracks, and no more than 5% of the edge length shall show no nicks, notches, or unhoned potions when viewed microscopically, at 100 diameters. The remainder of the blade shall have a smooth and bright, polished finish. The entire blade shall be free from rust, scale, burrs, pits and cracks. The finished blade shall be coated with a fluorocarbon-telomer coating such as polytetrafluoroethylene or shall have a fine silicon fluid coating.
Hardness of the blade. When tested in accordance with ASTM E18, E92, E140, or equivalent British standard Method, cutting blades shall be uniformly hardened to 85-93 on the Rockwell N Scale using a 15 Kgf load.
Overall length of razor. The overall length of the razor shall be 101 mm (4 in) with a tolerance of plus or minus 6 mm (0.24 in).
Protective cap. The protective cap shall be designed to provide a friction fit and completely cover the cutting edges of the blade(s).
Identification marking. The razor shall be permanently and legibly marked with the name or trademark of the manufacturer.
