COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
TOOTHBRUSH, ADULT’S (MULTITUFT)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description, for all Federal Agencies.
This commercial item description covers toothbrushes for individual use by adults for personal hygiene. The brush requirements are similar to a commercial SOFT adult’s toothbrush, wherein the commercial designation for adult’s toothbrushes is “soft”, “medium”, and “hard”.
1. Salient characteristics:
1.1. Type I (figure 1) and Type II toothbrushes shall have rounded leading end, shaped neck, and flat even working surface. For Type III brushes, the neck-to-handle angle (angle A) shall be 10 to 15 degrees. (figure 2 and figure 2A). The head, neck, and handle shall be molded in one piece from Grade A quality polypropylene.
1.2. The Type I and Type II toothbrush shall meet the following requirements:
Block length, overall (minimum) 152 mm (6 inches)
Block thickness (minimum) 4.8 mm (3/16 inch)
Head molding length (minimum) 22 mm (7/8 inch)
Head molding width (minimum) 9 mm (23/64 inch)
Number of tuft holes 30-60
Filament ends per tuft (minimum) 30
Filament length clear of block (minimum) 10 mm (0.406 inch)
Filament diameter 0.006 – 0.008 inch
1.3 The toothbrush shall have minimum of three rows of bristle tufts. The tufts shall be uniformly spaced and symmetrically located. Tuft shall be firmly anchored in the holes either by nickel-silver slugs or stapling.
1.4 Synthetic filaments. The filament for the tuft material shall be a premium quality nylon. The ends of the filaments shall be rounded so that sharp points and rough edges that could cause injury to the gums are eliminated.
